International Sauna Society

International Sauna Society (Kansainvälinen Saunaliitto) was founded in 1977 on the initiative of Finnish Sauna Society. The ISS is a common organization for sauna associations in different countries. Its purpose is quite similar to that of the Finnish Sauna Society, i.e. to promote the spreading and use of the sauna worldwide, but the emphasis in the activities of the ISS is on international matters. The General Secretariat of the ISS is located in Finland, hosted by  Finnish Sauna Society. President of the ISS is Mr Risto Elomaa from Finland.

Probably the most visible form of activity of the ISS is the organizing of an International Sauna Congress roughly every four years. In fact, this tradition got started already in 1956, long before the ISS was founded. So far there have been 15 congresses, held in Germany (five times), Finland (four times), Austria, former Czechoslovakia, the Netherlands, Japan and Switzerland. The latest congress took place Tokyo in May 27th-28th, 2010.
